According to Zee News reports, there were 280 people on board the Boeing 777-200 aircraft. The plane was flying from Amsterdan to Kuala Lumpur. The plane which flew from the Amsterdam airport at 12:10 pm local time was supposed to land at Kuala Lumpur airport at 6:00 AM local time.
It is said to have crashed about 50km from Russia.
A Russian aviation industry source told Reuters that the airliner did not enter Russian airspace when it was expected, but crashed in eastern Ukraine.
It said the Boeing plane was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Reuters correspondent on the scene sees burning wreckage of plane, bodies on ground.
The plane was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew members.
Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko wrote on Facebook that the plane was shot down.
The same has been confirmed by the Ukraine 's President, reports AFP.
Malaysian Airlines Twitter feed says, "Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala. Lumpur. The last known position of aircraft was over Ukrainian airspace."
