Breaking from their battles with pro-Russian separatists, that have continued to rage on and claim lives despite a ceasefire being in place since September 5, the army put on a 'Defend Your Country' event in Kharkov.
The event is held to strengthen the army's defensive ability as the region borders the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. More than 3,500 people have been killed in the fighting between government forces and the separatists in the industrial east, according to United Nations figures. The event came as Germany blamed pro-Russian rebels for downing the Malaysia Airline MH17 plane with a rocket from a Buk missile defence system.
The BND foreign intelligence agency says separatists fired the device from a Ukrainian base which exploded directly next to the passenger aircraft. It is the first time a European agency has openly pointed the finger at rebels who have so far denied accusations for the incident on July 17, that claimed the lives of 300 people.
