The post-graduate students of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), forcefully eviction from their hostels by the University authority, are calling for external intervention into what they termed inhumane and insensitive action.
Addressing reporters on Friday, the students said the UNN Vice Chancellor, Professor Benjamin Ozumba, ordered their eviction from the university’s hostel after a two-day peaceful protest they held to express their dissatisfaction over the hike of their school fees.
On the other hand, the University Vice Chancellor, Professor Benjamin Ozumba, said while the ejection was a pre-emptive action ahead of the convocation ceremony the issue of fee hike was only an adjustment triggered by prevailing economic development.
“The university only adjusted the fees for the post-graduate students after proper dialogue.
“The eviction was borne out of security reasons ahead of the university’s upcoming convocation ceremony,” Professor Ozumba said.
The majestic Odili Hostel stands towering above other buildings that may be in sight at the University premises.
It is the accommodation complex of the post-graduate students of the citadel of learning known for its motto, ‘Restoring the Dignity of Man.
But the current scenario rarely paints a picture of man having any dignity at all not to speak of one that will be restored.
It was just a peaceful demonstration to express dissatisfaction over what they termed school fees hike, but little did the students know that it would lead to their eviction from their hostel.
One of the post-graduate students, Okolobi Bosco, gave a report of what happened and how difficult things had become for other post-graduate students who now have no place to stay with their belongings scattered all over the place.
The school authority maintains their words, as the hostels are placed under lock and key.
The students sleep outside. They carry out their toilet activities in the open. The hostel corridor has become their kitchen and academic activities also take place in the open.
Michael Nwankwo, one of the post-graduate students, said the students were not naive. “We are well informed and our protest over the hike is not for protest sake,” he said.
While the stranded students roll their complaints against the Vice Chancellor, the consequences of the inhumane condition which they are subjected to abound.
The students said they would never renege if the event failed to end in their favour.
