Gunmen ambush wedding convoy.

Gunmen have attacked a wedding convoy in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, killing more than 30 people including the groom in a suspected ambush, witnesses and survivors said Sunday.
The attack happened on Saturday on the notorious Bama-Banki road when the wedding party, including friends and relatives of the groom, was making its way back to the state capital Maiduguri after the ceremony in Michika, in nearby in Adamawa State, they said.
"It was a gory scene," said a driver, who said he had seen the dead bodies on the highway.
The driver, who did not wish to be named, said that many of the victims appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.
"All the victims were brutally murdered by the attackers. My passengers and I were visibly shocked when we met the dead bodies lying by the highway," he said.
Army and police officials in the area were not immediately available for comment. But a security source who described the incident as "brutal and callous" said the bodies had been transferred to a hospital in Maiduguri.
God help us in this country though!

28 killed and 200 injured in a stampede at Uke Adoration house

28 people have been reported dead and 200 injured in a stampede which took place in the early hours of yesterday November 2 at a prayer house in Uke, Idenmili known popularly known as "ebube monso"

According to an eye witness who pleaded anonymity, there was a vigil at the prayer house on Friday night which led to Saturday morning. And as the vigil was about to wrap up at about 4.45AM Gov. Peter Obi, his god son Willie Obiano and APGA  national chairman, Chief Victor Umeh stepped up to the podium to do a campaign.

I learnt Obi gave the Rev father 2million Naira which he rejected and asked him to give to the hungry masses, the governor also promised to give the church 5million naira to help salvage the erosion site behind the church... Obi went on and on and on till the congregation couldn't take it any more and began to chant " ONWA!!!! ONWA!!! ONWA!!!"

Given this, Obi's thugs started to approach the direction of the "ONWA" chants in the congregation. On trying to escape the supposedly armed thugs, it all turned into a stampede. At the end of the stampede, a total of 28 corpse were found and 200 injured people rushed to the hospital.

Has the house of God now turned into a campaign ground Mr Governor? And at that time of the day? May the souls of the deceased RIP! See pictures after the cut...

Rita Dominic and Lynn Whitfield named Goodwill ambassadors for Africa.

The Executive Director and Founder of The Africa International Film Festival, Chioma Ude, has announced  the appointment of Rita Dominic and Lynn Whitfield as AFRIFF Goodwill Ambassadors. The announcement was made today during a media parley at the AFRIFF offices in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Remarking on the choice of the two star actresses, Chioma said, “Rita Dominic is a consummate actress and indeed an African screen Icon, having won several awards and nominations throughout her career, most recently she became Africa’s Best Actress by winning The 2012 Africa Movies Academy Award (AMAA) for her role in the Kenyan film Shattered . She also has won The Nollywood Movies Award, The Nigeria
Entertainment Award and City People’s Face of Nollywood Award. With over one hundred films to her credit, she has played a pivotal role in showcasing Nigerian cinema popularly known as Nollywood.” She further disclosed that it was not a difficult decision to make considering Rita’s accomplishments in the industry and the fact that she has been a regular face at, and contributor to, the AFRIFF dream from its
inaugural edition.

As for the Emmy Award winning Hollywood actress, Lynn Whitfield, Chioma said, “Lynn is a natural choice as AFRIFF Goodwill Ambassador not just for her accomplishments in Hollywood, but also because of her passionate support for the AFRIFF project since its inception.” Whitfield began her acting career in television and theatre, before progressing to supporting roles in film. She won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Special and a NAACP Image Award for her performance as Josephine Baker in the HBO movie The Josephine Baker Story (1991). She also won NAACP Image awards for her work in Touched by an Angel (1998), The Planet of Junior Brown (2000) and Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story (2004).

On her expectations from the newly appointed Goodwill Ambassadors, Chioma said, “We believe that these two talented, beautiful and popular stars will deliver maximum value to all stakeholders and participating communities, as the AFRIFF brand grows and continues to positively impact Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

In her response Rita said, “I love that AFRIFF’s focus is youth empowerment and opening doors for the development of the African film industry which is my primary constituency. I am delighted to have been appointed an AFRIFF Goodwill Ambassador. It’s an organization that I cherish and respect and I look forward to working with stakeholders in the industry, the government, the private sector and non-governmental
organisations and social enterprises to see how we can ensure that this fantastic festival achieves its objectives and full potential.”
